The pond was founded by Charles IV in 1366. It has served as a water source and a place to unwind ever since. In the 19th century, poet Karel Hynek Mácha often stayed here, and part of his famous poem Máj was inspired by the surrounding landscape.
Today, Máchovo jezero is the heart of the Máchův kraj region. It draws families, sports enthusiasts, and nature lovers alike. You’ll find beaches, boat rentals, and plenty of amenities along the shore.

In the middle of the lake, a rocky island called Snake Island rises from the water, overgrown with reeds and small trees. It's a peaceful nesting site for waterfowl.

Bezděz Castle Above the Lake
Towering above the water from a pair of cone-shaped hills, the Gothic Bezděz Castle was founded by King Ottokar II. It's one of the region's most iconic landmarks.
