Why this place

Two cultures side by side

Třebíč lies in the Vysočina Highlands, about 30 km southeast of Jihlava. The town’s history goes back to 1101, when Moravian princes founded a Benedictine monastery here. A town gradually grew up around it, and right next to the Christian part, a large Jewish quarter developed.

It’s this coexistence of two cultures that makes Třebíč so special. Towering over the town is the Basilica of St Procopius, one of the most valuable sacred buildings in the country, while below it winds a maze of Jewish quarter streets with two synagogues and an old cemetery. The Jewish Quarter and the Basilica were inscribed on the 2003 they were jointly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List — making this the only Jewish heritage site outside of Israel to receive such recognition.

From Prague, it's roughly 157 kilometers by car, with the drive taking about two hours. With a private driver, you leave whenever you like — you'll be dropped off near the center, and the same car will pick you up in the evening. Along the way, you can stop in Telč or Jihlava.
