Private Driver Day Trip to Telč
A tiny town in the Czech Highlands with one of Europe’s most beautiful squares — a row of Renaissance houses with arcades and ornate gables, a château, and a tower mirrored in the surrounding ponds. No transfers, no parking, no waiting. Fixed price from Prague or straight from the airport.
Why this place
A square that looks like a film set
Telč sits in the Czech Highlands, about 150 kilometers southeast of Prague, on the old border between Bohemia and Moravia. Step onto the main square and you’ll feel like you’ve walked into a painting — a long row of colorful houses with arcades and ornate Renaissance gables, a château at one end, water all around. This exceptionally well-preserved ensemble earned Telč a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1992.
The town owes its look to one man. In the mid-16th century, Zachariáš of Hradec took over the estate and transformed a Gothic castle into a comfortable Renaissance château. He then gave the same treatment to the burgher houses on the square — and since almost nothing was torn down afterward, the whole picture has stayed intact to this day.
From Prague, it’s about 150 kilometers by car, and the drive along the D1 motorway toward Jihlava takes roughly two hours. With a private driver, there’s no need to switch from train to bus or keep an eye on schedules — you leave whenever you want, the driver drops you off just steps from the square, and the same car takes you back in the evening. Along the way, you can stop in Jihlava or at Dačice Château, for example.
What to see in Telč
The places people come here for
The historic core is small and entirely pedestrian — you can walk from one end of the square to the other in just a few minutes. The château, churches, and a stroll around the ponds are all easily doable in a single day.

Zachariáš of Hradec Square
The heart of Telč and one of the most beautiful squares in the country. This long, elongated space is lined with a continuous row of burgher houses featuring arcades and richly decorated gables — each house is different, yet the whole thing holds together perfectly. This is where many classic Czech fairy tales were filmed.
Walk the full length of the square under the arcades and take in the details on the facades. In the center stands a Baroque plague column and two fountains.

Telč Château
At the western end of the square stands a Renaissance château with an arcaded courtyard, commissioned by Zachariáš of Hradec and built by Italian masters. Inside, original interiors with painted ceilings and stucco work have been preserved — it ranks among the best-preserved Renaissance residences in Central Europe.
The château also includes a park and a peaceful courtyard. A guided tour takes about an hour; you can choose from several routes.

Holy Spirit Tower
The oldest structure in town — a late Romanesque tower soaring over forty meters high. Climbing the stairs is well worth it: from the top you get the best view of the entire square, the rooftops, and the shimmering surfaces of the fishponds surrounding the town.
Right nearby you'll find the Gothic Church of St. James and the Baroque Jesuit Church of the Name of Jesus — both towers are part of Telč's iconic skyline.

Fishponds & Fortifications
Telč is nestled between three fishponds — Ulický, Štěpnický, and Staroměstský. It's the water that gives the town its famous look: the castle and towers mirror on the surface, and a pleasant walk runs along the dikes and old ramparts.
It's a peaceful counterpoint to the lively square and the best spot for photos — especially in the morning or evening light.

Renaissance Gables
Every house on the square has a different gable and a different façade. This collection of houses with arcades makes Telč a textbook example of a Renaissance town.
Castle Interiors
Painted ceilings, stucco work, and period furnishings. The castle interiors are among the best-preserved in the country — well worth the tour.
Telč Summer Festival
A summer cultural festival running since 1982. The square and courtyards come alive with concerts and theatre performances.
Film Backdrops
The square and alleyways have served as the setting for many Czech fairy tales and films. No wonder — it looks straight out of a screenplay.
Castle Park
Behind the castle lies a peaceful park by the water. A lovely spot to unwind between your tour and lunch.
Dačice Castle Nearby
Just a short drive from Telč lies Dačice — the town where the sugar cube was invented. A perfect stop if you want to extend your trip; your driver will take you there.

Practical Information
Before You Go
When to Visit
Telč is beautiful year-round. Spring and fall are quieter; summer buzzes with the Prázdniny v Telči festival. Even in winter, the square has its own charm and fewer crowds.
Castle & Tickets
Castle tours are guided and offer several routes. In peak season, it’s best to go in the morning or check availability ahead of time.
Pedestrian Center
The historic core is largely car-free. With a private driver, parking is a non-issue — you’ll be dropped off as close as possible and picked up at a pre-arranged spot.
What to Try
Restaurants and cafés line the arcades right on the square. Just a bit away in Dačice, the sugar cube was invented — a fun story to go with dessert.
What to Bring
Comfortable shoes for the cobblestones and the tower climb, layers, and a camera. It’s often cooler by the ponds than in the square.
How Much Time
Half a day is enough for the square, castle, and tower. Add lunch, a stroll around the ponds, and a stop in Jihlava, and you’ll want a full day.
