Why go here

Brno – a city of tradition with a modern vibe

Brno is the Czech Republic’s second-largest city, and it manages to be both historic and youthful. It’s been on the map since the 12th century, but today it’s a university and trade-fair hub with its own distinct mood — and even its own slang.

Špilberk Castle keeps watch over the city, once a feared fortress and prison. Petrov Hill is crowned by the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, and on the city’s edge stands Villa Tugendhat — a functionalist masterpiece by Mies van der Rohe from 1929–1930, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then there’s Freedom Square and the Cabbage Market.

From Prague it’s about 207 kilometres along the D1 motorway, taking roughly two and a half hours. With a private driver, you don’t have to worry about parking or public transport connections.

Špilberk Castle

Špilberk Castle towers over Brno, once a feared fortress and prison. Under the Habsburgs, it was known as the “dungeon of nations.”

Today it houses the city museum and the casemates. The ramparts offer a lovely view over all of Brno.

St. Peter and Paul Cathedral
Cathedral

St. Peter and Paul Cathedral

The Cathedral on Petrov Hill, with its two slender spires, is a symbol of Brno. It got its neo-Gothic look at the turn of the 20th century.

The bells ring noon already at 11 a.m. — a reminder of the ruse that saved the city from a Swedish siege.

Square

Zelný trh (Cabbage Market)

Zelný trh is a sloping square where markets have been held for centuries. At its center stands the Baroque Parnas Fountain.

Just steps away are the Reduta Theatre, the oldest in Central Europe, and the entrance to Brno’s underground.

Square

Náměstí Svobody (Freedom Square)

Náměstí Svobody is Brno’s main square, with a plague column and historic townhouses. It’s also home to the black stone astronomical clock.

Every day at 11 a.m., the clock releases a glass marble — tourists wait at its four openings to catch one.
