Why This Place

Day Trip to Vranov nad Dyjí Castle: Baroque Splendor, History & Movie Backdrops

Vranov nad Dyjí Castle has stood on a rocky promontory above the Dyje River since the Middle Ages. The first written mention comes from Cosmas’s chronicle in 1100. Originally royal property, later held by noble families like the Lichtenburks and Dietrichsteins, it went through dramatic times — damaged by the Swedes during the Thirty Years’ War, and finished off by a fire in 1665.

The then-owners, the Althann family, decided to rebuild the ruins. Following plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, a Baroque castle emerged whose architectural highlight is the Hall of Ancestors — 25 × 15 × 15 meters. The hall is dominated by statues of the Althann ancestors and a fresco in the dome by Johann Michael Rottmayr. The complex also includes a Baroque castle chapel of the Holy Trinity from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.

From Prague, the château is about 290 kilometers away — the drive takes roughly 3.5 hours. With a private driver, you can sit back and enjoy the ride without worrying about parking or navigation. The château is open to the public and offers tours of more than twenty rooms that showcase life from the late 18th through the late 19th century.
