Why This Place

A site you need to see and remember

The fortress town of Terezín was built by Emperor Joseph II in the late 18th century to defend against Prussia. But its darkest chapter came during WWII, when the Nazis turned it into an instrument of persecution.

The Small Fortress served as a Gestapo prison. The surrounding town became a Jewish ghetto and transit hub on the way to extermination camps. Over 150,000 people passed through; tens of thousands died here, and most of the rest were deported to Auschwitz. Today the entire site is managed by the Terezín Memorial.

From Prague it’s about 63 kilometers and roughly an hour by car. With a private driver, we’ll pick you up at home or the airport, wait while you explore at your own pace, and drive you back — no rush, no hunting for connections.

The Small Fortress
Memorial

The Small Fortress

During World War II, the Gestapo turned the Small Fortress into a prison. Above the entrance gate, the cynical slogan Arbeit macht frei — Work Sets You Free — remains to this day.

Thousands of prisoners passed through these gates, many never to return. Today, the fortress stands as a place of remembrance and a tribute to their fates.

The National Cemetery
Memorial

The National Cemetery

In front of the Small Fortress lies the National Cemetery with thousands of graves. It holds the remains of victims from both the prison and the Terezín ghetto.

At its center stand a large cross and a menorah. People come here in silence to honor the memory of those who died.

The Ghetto Museum
Museum

The Ghetto Museum

The Ghetto Museum preserves children’s drawings, diaries, and personal belongings of prisoners. They tell the story of life and suffering inside the Terezín ghetto.

Nearly 150,000 Jews passed through the town; most were deported to extermination camps. The museum keeps their stories alive.
