★ Memorial site · village razed in 1942

Lidice Private Driver Tour from Prague

Lidice stands as a solemn reminder of one of the darkest chapters in Czech history. In 1942, the Nazis razed the village to the ground, executed the men, and deported the women and children — retaliation for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. Today, a memorial park marks the site. We'll drive you there from Prague for a quiet, reflective visit.

Why visit this place

The village they tried to erase

On June 10, 1942, the Nazis marched into Lidice. In retaliation for the assassination of Acting Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich, they shot 173 men, sent the women to Ravensbrück concentration camp, and murdered most of the children.

The village was then burned, razed to the ground, and erased from the map. But word of Lidice spread worldwide — towns renamed themselves in its honor, and the "Lidice Shall Live" movement was born. Today, the original site is a memorial area with a monument, museum, and the Rose Garden.

From Prague, it's just about 20 kilometers — roughly half an hour by car. With your own private driver, we'll pick you up, wait while you explore, and bring you safely back.

What you'll see in Lidice

The Memorial Grounds

The site is open and best explored on foot. We recommend starting at the museum — it gives the place context.

Monument to the Child Victims of War
Monument

Monument to the Child Victims of War

A sculpture of 82 bronze children commemorates the Lidice children murdered by the Nazis. Sculptor Marie Uchytilová worked on it for over twenty years.

Each face has its own features and expression. People pause in silence before the sculpture, leaving children's toys behind.

The Memorial Grounds

All that remains of the razed village are the outlines of foundations, gentle undulations in the terrain, and a mass grave of the men. On June 10, 1942, the Nazis burned the houses and leveled the village to the ground.

A path leads past where the church, school, and Horák farm once stood. Today, the entire area is a quiet place of remembrance.

Rose Garden of Peace
Garden

Rose Garden of Peace

Above the memorial grounds blooms the Garden of Peace and Friendship, with thousands of rose bushes planted by people from around the world in memory of Lidice.

In summer, the garden is fragrant and bursts with thousands of colors. It stands as a symbol that hope can follow even the cruelty of war.

New Lidice
Village

New Lidice

A short distance from the memorial grounds, a new village called Lidice was built after the war. Volunteers and donors from many countries constructed it so the name would never disappear.

Today, ordinary people and children live here. New Lidice is a quiet answer to the attempt to erase the village from the map.
