Why go here
The Garden of Europe in South Moravia
Lednice lies in South Moravia near Břeclav, about 50 kilometres south of Brno. The château was the seat of the princely Liechtenstein family, who gradually turned the entire surrounding area into a vast landscaped complex — linking the châteaux of Lednice and Valtice with avenues, fishponds, and romantic follies into one great “Garden of Europe”.
The château received its present Neo-Gothic form during a reconstruction around 1846 based on plans by architect Georg Wingelmüller. In addition to the lavish interiors and the famous tropical greenhouse, the grounds also include the 60-metreminaret, the artificial ruin of Janohrad, or the sprawling park covering around 200 hectares. The entire Lednice-Valtice area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
From Prague, it’s roughly 257 kilometers by car, with a drive time of about three hours. This is a full-day trip — with a private driver, you skip the hassle of train transfers, head out early, spend the whole day exploring the grounds, and get a comfortable ride back in the evening. Along the way, you can stop in Brno or Valtice.
What to see in Lednice
The places people come for
The grounds are vast and mostly pedestrian. The château, greenhouse, and a walk through the park to the minaret are easily doable in a single day — by bike or boat, you can cover even more.

Château and interiors
A guided tour takes you through the state rooms with richly carved wooden ceilings, paneling, and a library. The Neo-Gothic décor is among the finest of its kind in Central Europe.
You can choose from several circuits, including the princely apartments and children’s rooms.

Tropical greenhouse
Right next to the château stands a greenhouse from 1843–1845 — an iron-and-glass structure filled with tropical and subtropical plants. Even in winter, it’s green and warm inside.
It’s one of the oldest and most beautiful château greenhouses in the country.

Minaret
In the middle of the park rises a 60-meter minaret built in the Moorish style between 1797 and 1802 — the tallest structure of its kind in the country. Climb the stairs and you’re rewarded with a view over the entire grounds.
The path leads through a pleasant park along the water.

Janohrad & the Park
Janohrad is a man-made Gothic castle ruin built between 1807 and 1810, one of several romantic structures scattered throughout the park. A network of paths, ponds, and tree-lined avenues winds around it.
You can explore the park on foot, by bike, or even by boat.

Boat Ride
Sightseeing boats cruise the château pond and the Dyje River all the way to the minaret. A lovely way to see the grounds from the water.
Greenhouse
A tropical oasis right next to the château, filled with palms and exotic plants — just as inviting on a rainy day.
Minaret
The tallest minaret in the Czech Republic (60 m), offering panoramic views over the entire Lednice-Valtice area.
Valtice & Wine
Nearby Valtice, with its own château, is the heart of Moravian wine country. A perfect stop for wine lovers.
Cycling
The area is crisscrossed with bike paths winding between ponds and avenues of trees. Bikes can be rented right in Lednice.
Brno
Moravia's capital is about an hour away. A great add-on if you want to stretch your day trip a little further.

Practical info
Before you go
When to go
The estate is at its best from spring through fall, when the park is in bloom and the boats are running. Summer can be busy — early mornings are quieter. The greenhouse is lovely even in winter.
Tours
The palace interiors are only accessible with a guide on several different circuits. In season, it's best to arrive in the morning or check availability ahead of time.
Sprawling grounds
The estate is huge and mostly pedestrian. With a private driver, parking is not your concern — they'll drop you as close as possible and pick you up at an agreed spot.
What to try
Moravian cuisine and especially the local wines from the Valtice region. There are plenty of restaurants and wineries near the palace and in Valtice itself.
What to bring
Comfortable shoes for walking through the park (it's quite a hike to the minaret), layers of clothing, and a camera. A bike is also a good idea.
How much time
Given the distance, plan for a full day. The palace, greenhouse, and park are just enough; adding Valtice and a boat ride will take even longer.
