Legend has it that a hunting dog of Charles IV discovered the first hot spring — the emperor then elevated the settlement to a town in 1370. The heart of the town is the Vřídlo — a geyser that blasts 72 °C water several metres into the air. Around it and along the river runs a string of colonnades where people still sip the curative water from the distinctive porcelain cups with a spout in the handle. From Prague, it’s about 130 kilometers by car, and the highway drive takes roughly an hour and 45 minutes. The water has a strong mineral taste — think of it as an experience, not a soft drink. Pair it with a sweet spa wafer from a nearby stall.
The Mlýnská Colonnade
This long Neo-Renaissance colonnade with its columns and statues is the loveliest building in the spa. It houses several springs and was the heart of spa life throughout the 19th century. A stroll under its arcade is one of the most pleasant things you can do in Karlovy Vary.
A bit further on, you’ll find the Market and Park Colonnades — each with its own springs and its own atmosphere.
Grandhotel Pupp & the Spa Quarter
The city’s most famous hotel, with a history stretching back to the 18th century — you might recognize it from the movies. Around it lies a neighborhood filled with Art Nouveau and Neoclassical buildings, cafés, and boutiques. Every July, this is where the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival brings the world together.

Diana Lookout Tower & the Funicular
Forested hills rise above the spa quarter, and a historic funicular from near Grandhotel Pupp takes you up one of them. At the top stands the Diana lookout tower, offering the best panoramic views of the city nestled in greenery. The ride up takes just a few minutes, and you can walk back down through the woods.
It’s a refreshing escape from the lively colonnades and a fantastic spot for photos.
Becherovka & Its Museum
An herbal liqueur playfully called the “thirteenth spring.” At the museum in the city center, you’ll learn its story and taste it right at the source.
Moser Glassworks
Luxury Moser glass has been crafted here since 1857, once gracing royal courts. The complex houses a museum, a working glass furnace, and a company store.
Spa Wafers
