Why go here

Jizerské hory: a trip to the Czech Republic’s northernmost mountain range

Jizerské hory — locals call them Jizerky — are the northernmost range in the Czech Republic. Their name comes from the Jizera River, which rises on the slopes of Smrk, the highest peak on the Czech side. Once considered the western spur of the Krkonoše, they’re now recognized as a distinct geological region. About a third of the range lies in Poland, including the highest point of the entire Jizerské hory — Wysoka Kopa (1,128 m).

What defines Jizerky are their flattened summits, granite outcrops, and extensive peat bogs. There are 30 peaks over 1,000 meters here — 15 on the Czech side, most crowned with striking rock formations. The best known include Smrk (1,124 m), Jizera (1,122 m), and Černá hora (1,085 m). A network of hiking trails crisscrosses the landscape, winding through forests and along open ridges.

From Prague, the Jizera Mountains are about 105 km away — roughly a 1.5-hour drive. With a private driver, there’s no need to worry about parking or navigation. Just pick your starting point and go. Whether you’re planning a hike, a bike ride, or a leisurely walk to a lookout tower, the Jizera Mountains have plenty of space for everyone.

Mountain Streams and Forests

Ancient beech forests, listed as a UNESCO site, arch over the streams. The woods are filled with a profound silence.

Painted Timber Cottages

Along the roads stand typical Jizera timber cottages with colorfully painted shutters and heart motifs. They are among the finest examples of folk architecture in Bohemia.

Smědava Mountain Chalet

At a crossroads in the heart of the mountains stands the popular Smědava Chalet. Hiking trails and bike paths converge here from all directions.

It’s the perfect spot for a snack while exploring the mountains. In winter, well-groomed cross-country ski trails start from here.

Peat Bogs & Marshes

On the high plateaus, vast peat bogs and marshes stretch across the landscape. Meandering streams and clumps of grass give the area an almost Nordic feel.

The most famous spot is the settlement of Jizerka with its surrounding meadows. A nature trail with boardwalks leads through the area.
