Why go here

Day trip to Český Šternberk: a Gothic castle above the Sázava

Český Šternberk is a Gothic castle later converted into a château, perched on a rocky ridge above the left bank of the Sázava River. It was founded by Zdeslav of Divišov in 1241, and its name comes from the family coat of arms — the star (Stern in German) and the mountain (Berg). Since 2008 it has been protected as a national cultural monument.

Over the centuries the castle changed hands several times and underwent numerous rebuilds. In the 15th century it was conquered by the army of King George of Poděbrady, and later returned to the Sternberg family. In 1992 it was restituted to Zdeněk Sternberg, a descendant of the original owners.

From Prague it’s about 54 kilometres — roughly an hour by car. With your private driver and car, you’ll arrive comfortably right at the castle and enjoy a stress-free day with no parking hassles.

This early Gothic castle has stood on a rocky spur above the Sázava River since the 13th century. The Šternberk family has owned it ever since, bar a brief interruption.

Inside, you’ll find lavish Baroque halls with stucco work and a collection of copperplate engravings. It’s one of the best-preserved castles in the country.

Nestled beneath the castle by the river, a picturesque little village sits. A bridge crosses the Sázava, and in summer there’s often a canoe camp nearby.

The Sázava is a favourite among paddlers. From the castle, the views over the valley and the village are stunning.

The settlement beneath the castle is just a handful of houses squeezed between the rock, the river, and the woods. It’s a peaceful spot far from the bustle.

Stop here for a coffee or before heading out to explore the surroundings. The Sázava Valley is one of the loveliest in Central Bohemia.
