Why this destination
Buchlov Castle: a medieval fortress above the vineyards
Buchlov Castle (German: Buchlau) is a royal castle rising above Buchlovice at an elevation of 522 meters. Construction began in the first half of the 13th century as a strategic stronghold serving economic, defensive, and administrative purposes. From the very start, it held royal judicial authority and hunting rights.
Over the centuries, the castle passed through many hands — from royal pawns to the House of Žerotín and the Lords of Petřvald. The most extensive renovations took place between 1540 and 1558, when Jan Ždánský of Zástřizl rebuilt the upper castle in the Renaissance style. The last owners, the Counts Berchtold of Uherčice, gathered valuable natural history and historical collections here, which became the foundation of a family museum.
From Prague, it’s roughly 238 km — a private car with your driver takes about 3 hours. The castle has been protected as a cultural monument since 1968 and has been listed as a national cultural monument since 2002.

The Entrance Gate
You enter the castle via a drawbridge and a Baroque gate bearing the family crest. To the left stands an older round bastion.
Beyond the gate, the tour route begins. Guides share stories of the legendary Buchlov hunting rights.
