Highlights
What You’ll See
Bezděz Castle reveals medieval history and architecture at every turn.

Bezděz Castle Ruins
Bezděz was built in the 13th century by Přemysl Otakar II as a formidable royal fortress. Young Wenceslaus IV was even imprisoned here.
Today, the castle stands as a majestic ruin atop a hill. The climb takes about half an hour along a pilgrim path.

Royal Chapel
The Royal Chapel is one of the purest examples of early Gothic architecture in the country. It survived the centuries even as the castle fell into ruin.
Tall windows and a slender turret still feel noble amid the ruins. It’s the most precious part of the castle.

Devil’s Tower
The round Devil’s Tower stands on the lower end of the castle promontory and is tied to many local legends.
Together with the Great Tower, it formed the castle’s defense. From here, you get sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

Views over Mácha’s Region
On a clear day, the summit of Bezděz offers views of Lake Mácha, Ještěd Mountain, and Říp Hill. This hill is one of the best viewpoints in the region.
The landscape was made famous by poet Karel Hynek Mácha. Bezděz was one of his favorite spots.
