Private Driver Day Trip to Valdštejn Castle
Valdštejn is the oldest castle in the Bohemian Paradise — a rocky ruin connected by a stone bridge lined with statues, just like Charles Bridge. All around are sandstone towers and forests. We’ll drive you straight there from Prague.
Why this destination
Valdštejn Castle: a romantic ruin in Bohemian Paradise
Valdštejn Castle — Waldstein in German, meaning “forest stone” — was built sometime between 1260 and 1280. Its founder was likely Jaroslav of Hruštice, the burgrave of Mladá Boleslav Castle, or his son Zdeněk. The Markvartic family built their ancestral seat here and adopted the name “Lords of Valdštejn” after the castle — the origin of the famous Wallenstein dynasty.
Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times. In the 14th century it passed to the Vartenberks; in 1424 it was captured by Hussite commander Jan Žižka. Later, marauding bands took over, until the local militia drove them out in 1440. Around 1550 the castle burned down and lay in ruins. At the end of the 17th century, hermit Václav Holan Rovenský settled here, and pilgrims began to visit.
The estate’s owners — first the Waldstein family, then the Aehrenthals — gradually transformed the ruins into a romantic pilgrimage site. Stone steps were built in 1713, followed by the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk in 1722 and a series of statues. Today the castle is owned by the town of Turnov and protected as a cultural monument. From Prague it’s about 95 km away, a drive of roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes by private car.
