Why go here

Prachov Rocks – a sandstone labyrinth near Jičín

Geologically, this is where the Jičín Uplands meet the Turnov Uplands and the Vyskeř Highlands. The rock massif formed from sediments of a shallow Cretaceous sea and today stands as a landscape of dramatic cliffs and towers.

Archaeological finds show people lived here as far back as prehistory. In the late Middle Ages, a castle was built atop a basalt peak at Veliš; later the area belonged to the Šlik and Waldstein families. In 1933, it became a state nature reserve.

From Prague it's ~88 km, about a 1.25-hour drive in a private car with your own driver. That means comfortable, flexible access to all the main sights.

Pelíšek Pond

Tucked away in the middle of the rocks is the romantic Pelíšek Pond with a sandy beach. In summer you can even swim in it.

The area around the water is a lovely spot to relax. The path to it leads right through the rock city.

Pařez Castle

On the edge of the rocks stand the remains of the small rock castle Pařez. The masonry grows straight out of a sandstone block among the trees.

The castle guarded this area back in the Middle Ages. Today it’s a quiet destination for a walk away from the main trails.
