Loket Castle Day Trip with a Private Driver
Perched on a rocky outcrop in a bend of the Ohře River, Loket Castle looks like it stepped straight out of a fairy tale — and fittingly, it was a filming location for the classic Czech comedy *Jáchyme, hoď ho do stroje*. This Romanesque-Gothic fortress, the winding lanes of the town below, and the river looping all around make for a perfect escape. We’ll drive you there from Prague with zero transfers.
Why Go Here
Loket Castle: A Medieval Fortress Above the Ohře
Loket Castle (known as Elbogen in German) sits in the town of the same name in the Sokolov district. According to archaeological research from 2025, its origins go back about a hundred years earlier than previously thought — to the turn of the 12th century. Even then, it was a fully stone structure built with mortar.
The first written mention dates to 1227, when a meeting took place here between the sovereign and a Dominican monk from Regensburg. The castle hosted kings Wenceslaus I, Ottokar II, and Charles IV, who redeemed it from a lien in 1333. During the Hussite Wars, it withstood three failed siege attempts.
From Prague, it’s roughly 130 km — about a 1.75-hour drive. Your driver will take you comfortably all the way to the castle, so you can enjoy the trip without a single worry.
What to see
What you’ll see at the castle
Explore Gothic halls, the castle chapel, and the room where a young Charles IV was once imprisoned.

Loket Castle
One of the oldest stone castles in the country, perched on a rocky outcrop above the town. Its exhibits include weaponry, porcelain, and the castle dungeon.
In the courtyard, you’ll find the Loket meteorite, known as the Cursed Burgrave. Climb the tower for panoramic views over the entire town.

Stone bridge over the Ohře
A stone bridge leads into town across the Ohře River, offering one of the most iconic views of the castle.
The river forms a sharp bend here, giving the town its name. In warmer months, it’s a favorite spot for kayakers.

Historic town square
The picturesque square is lined with colorful burgher houses and the town hall. Relax at one of the cafés or pastry shops.
The poet Goethe was a frequent visitor to Loket, and a commemorative plaque still marks his presence in town.

Ohře River below the castle
The Ohře wraps around the rocky promontory in a tight bend, with pleasant walking paths along its banks.
From the riverside, the castle looks straight out of a fairy tale — a beautiful destination for a drive or a stroll.
