Kutná Hora’s golden — or rather silver — age spanned the 13th to 16th centuries. Right here, at the Italian Court, the Prague groschen was minted, one of the strongest coins in Europe at the time. The wealth of miners and mint masters gave rise to buildings you wouldn’t expect in a small town: a cathedral dedicated to the patron saint of miners, burgher houses with stone portals, and the monastery in Sedlec. When the silver ran out, the town stood still in time — and today it feels like a living textbook of Gothic architecture.
From Prague, it’s only about 70 kilometers by car, and the drive takes roughly an hour. You can get here by train, but the station is a fair walk from the main sights, and you’d still need to shuttle between Sedlec and the center. This high Gothic cathedral, dedicated to St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners, is one of the most famous Gothic structures in Central Europe. Construction began in 1388 and, with interruptions, stretched over five centuries; architects from Peter Parler's circle also worked on the project. Inside, you'll be awed by the net vaulting, original medieval frescoes depicting mining life, and monumental windows.
From the outdoor terrace on Barbara Street, lined with statues, you get one of the most beautiful views of the city. Entry to the church is ticketed; in peak season, it's best to come in the morning.
Sedlec Ossuary
The Cemetery Church of All Saints in Sedlec is one of the most unusual places in the Czech Republic. Its interior is decorated with the bones of tens of thousands of people, arranged into a bell, pyramids, monograms, and the famous chandelier said to contain every bone in the human body. The current decoration was created in 1870 by woodcarver František Rint for the Schwarzenberg family — you can even find their coat of arms in the bones.
The site feels more reverent and fascinating than eerie. The chapel is small, so expect to take it all in within about half an hour.
Italian Court — The Royal Mint
The former royal mint, where the Prague groschen was struck from the turn of the 13th century onward. The complex got its name “Italian Court” from the Italian experts who came to introduce coinage here. It also served as a royal residence — King Wenceslaus IV once lived here. Today you can explore the minting workshops, the chapel, an exhibition on groschen production, and even strike your own coin.
Italian Court sits right in the center, just a few steps from St. Barbara’s Cathedral, so you can easily visit both landmarks together.
Czech Museum of Silver & the Silver Mine
Housed in the Gothic Hrádek castle, the Czech Museum of Silver tells the story of local mining and coin minting. The highlight is descending into a real medieval mine tunnel — helmet and miner’s coat included, you’ll squeeze through narrow passageways where miners once dug for silver ore centuries ago.
The mine tour is a big hit, especially with families. Capacity is limited, so we recommend booking tickets in advance, particularly during the season.
Cathedral in Sedlec
Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and St. John the Baptist — originally a Cistercian monastery church, brilliantly rebuilt in Baroque Gothic style by Jan Blažej Santini. A UNESCO site.
Stone Fountain
A late Gothic twelve-sided fountain from the late 15th century by the workshop of Matěj Rejsek. Once the town's water supply, now a square landmark.
Stone House
An ornately decorated burgher house with a stone Gothic gable from the late 15th century. One of the most valuable burgher buildings in the country, now housing a museum exhibition.
Church of St. James
The oldest town church with a striking tower, a skyline landmark alongside the Italian Court. A 14th-century Gothic structure with Baroque furnishings.
GASK — Jesuit College
The Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region in a massive Baroque Jesuit college overlooking the valley. Modern art in historic halls, with a terrace featuring sculptures out front.
