Křivoklát Castle Day Trip with Private Driver
Křivoklát is one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in Czechia — Přemyslid kings once hunted in its deep forests. Gothic halls, a chapel with priceless panel paintings, and a towering keep rise from the woods less than an hour from Prague.
Why go here
Křivoklát Castle: a medieval gem in the heart of the Křivoklát forests
Křivoklát (German: Pürglitz) perches on a rocky spur above the Rakovnický stream, a tributary of the Berounka River. Its history reaches back to the 12th century — according to Cosmas's chronicle, Otto of Olomouc was imprisoned here between 1110 and 1113. It has been a protected cultural monument since 1965 and a national cultural monument since 1989.
You'll explore the monumental Gothic hall, the richly decorated 13th-century gate passage, and learn about the stays of kings Wenceslaus I and Ottokar II. The castle is managed by the National Heritage Institute and is open year-round.
It's just 52 km from Prague — about an hour by private car with your own driver. Sit back, relax, and get dropped off right at the gates.
Highlights
What you’ll see at Křivoklát
The guided tours take you through the castle’s most fascinating parts — from royal chambers to mysterious dungeons.

Great Tower
The massive round Great Tower is the castle’s most striking feature. It served as a prison — even the alchemist Edward Kelley was held here.
From below it looks forbidding; from the top, the view over the wooded Berounka valley is breathtaking.

Knights' Hall
The Knights' Hall is one of the castle’s most beautiful rooms, adorned with Gothic benches and a collection of late Gothic art.
Right next door is the famous royal chapel — one of the finest in the country.

Castle Courtyard
The picturesque courtyard is lined with arcaded palaces and outdoor staircases. This is where the guided tours begin.
It’s a peaceful spot with a real medieval atmosphere. In season, historical events are held here.

Castle above the Berounka
Křivoklát sits on a promontory above the Berounka River in the heart of the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. It was a favourite hunting castle of Bohemian kings.
The surrounding forests are among the best-preserved in the Czech Republic and are perfect for hiking and cycling trips.
