Karlštejn rises from a limestone cliff above the Berounka River, about thirty kilometers southwest of Prague. It was founded in 1348 by Charles IV with one very specific mission: to safely house the Imperial Crown Jewels and his collection of holy relics. That’s why the castle is built in a stepped layout, with the most precious space at the very top, inside the Great Tower. To this day, it’s one of the most famous and second most visited castles in the country.
The heart of Karlštejn is the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the Great Tower, which Charles IV had decorated as only heaven itself was adorned in the Middle Ages: walls covered in semi-precious stones and gilding, plus 129 panel paintings by Master Theodoric
, the largest surviving collection of its kind in the world. The chapel served as a treasury for the crown jewels and as a private retreat for the emperor. It’s the very reason people travel here from every corner of the globe.From Prague, it’s just about 30 kilometers by car, and the drive takes roughly forty minutes. You can get here by train, but from the station, you’ll still have a walk through the town and up the hill to the castle. The castle offers two tour routes. The basic one takes you through the palaces and towers; the second — limited and reservation-only — leads all the way to the famous Chapel of the Holy Cross.
The Great Tower & Chapel of the Holy Cross
The tallest and most fortified part of the castle, built specifically to protect the crown jewels. Inside lies the Chapel of the Holy Cross — a gilded vault that evokes the night sky, walls inlaid with polished semi-precious stones, and 129 panel paintings of saints by Master Theodoric surrounding you.
You can only enter the chapel on Tour II, which has limited capacity and often sells out. We recommend booking your tickets in advance — otherwise, you risk missing out.
The Imperial Palace
The residential part of the castle where the emperor stayed during his visits. The basic Tour I takes you through state and private halls, the bedchamber, and the audience hall, giving you a glimpse of daily court life in the 14th century. It’s accessible without a reservation for most of the season.
The tour usually starts in the palace, making it a great introduction before you climb up to the towers higher on the hill.
Marian Tower & St. Catherine’s Chapel
Inside the Marian Tower, you’ll find the Church of the Virgin Mary with precious wall paintings and the tiny Chapel of St. Catherine, which Charles IV had built as his private prayer room. Its walls are inlaid with semi-precious stones, just like the chapel in the Great Tower — only on a more intimate scale.
The frescoes even depict the emperor himself, making this one of the few places where you can come face to face with a medieval ruler.
Well Tower & Courtyard
No castle could survive a siege without water, and Karlštejn’s well is 78 meters deep. Water was once hauled up in a massive wooden wheel, still preserved in the Well Tower to this day. From the courtyard and ramparts, you also get one of the finest views over the Berounka River valley.
Exploring the castle means climbing a few dozen steps — which is exactly why Karlštejn still feels so impenetrable, even after centuries.
Karlštejn Vineyard
Wine has been grown on the terraces of Kněží hora above the castle since Charles IV brought the tradition here. In season, stop for a glass with a view of the castle.
Karlštejn Town
The path to the castle leads through a lively village of shops, bakeries, and pubs. A lovely spot for lunch or coffee before the climb — or after.
Czech Karst (CHKO)
A protected landscape of limestone cliffs, quarries, and beech forests. Perfect for a short walk or a viewpoint over the Berounka River.
Koněprusy Caves
The largest cave system in Bohemia, just a short drive from Karlštejn. A great add-on if you want to stretch the trip into a full day — your driver will take you.

The Climb to the Castle

Spring and early fall are the most beautiful. Weekends and summer get crowded below the castle, so come in the morning. The castle also runs winter tours with Advent programs.

Climb & parking
