Brdy: Hills That Waited to Be Discovered
Brdy isn’t just one mountain range — it splits into three distinct areas: the Třemošná Highlands, the Strašice Highlands, and the Třemšín Highlands. The largest and highest is the Třemošná section, which includes the former military training area. This is where you’ll find all ten of Brdy’s peaks over 800 meters — including Tok (865 m) and Praha (862 m), the latter topped by a weather radar tower.
The name Brdy comes from the old Slavic word brdo, meaning a wooded hill or rocky cliff. And that’s exactly what this landscape is — rugged in places, peaceful in others, with coniferous forests at lower elevations and heathlands or peat bogs near the summits. Where to go in the Brdy Highlands
Whether you're drawn to panoramic viewpoints, historic ruins, or peaceful lakes, the Brdy region has it all. Most trails follow routes newly marked in 2016.
Padrťské rybníky
Deep in the forest lies a pair of ponds, the most beautiful spot in the entire Brdy region. Their wide, still waters stretch all the way to the dark woods on the horizon.
These ponds were built as early as the 16th century. It's total peace, far from civilization.
Valdek Castle Ruins
Hidden in the Brdy forests are the ruins of Valdek Castle, dating back to the 13th century. A massive round tower and a section of wall still stand on a rocky spur.
It's the oldest castle in the Brdy region. A pleasant forest path from Jindřichova skála leads straight to it.
Lookouts above the forest
From rocky viewpoints, you get sweeping views of endless forested Brdy ridges. In the distance, Valdek Castle appears on one of the hills.
The landscape feels wild and remote. At dusk, the hills are bathed in golden light.
Former military zone
For over seventy years, the Brdy region was a closed military training area. From above, you can still make out concrete pads and abandoned structures in the woods.
In 2016, the area opened to the public and became a protected landscape. Today, hikers and cyclists roam freely.
Hiking Trails
Since 2016, dozens of kilometers of marked hiking trails have been laid out in the Brdy. Most run through the former military training area, which has been cleared of explosives.
Cycling Routes
The Czech Tourist Club has marked new bike trails here, including routes up to Třemošná peak and to the ruins of Valdek Castle. The terrain is hilly in places, best suited for mountain bikes.
Forests & Heathlands
Lower elevations are covered in spruce forests dotted with larches, while the summits are home to heathlands and peat bogs. The area is a haven for rare species of fungi and lichens.
Brdy's Eight-Hundreders
Ten peaks rise above 800 meters, including Tok (865 m) and Praha (862 m). Each offers its own unique views and atmosphere.
Valdek Castle Ruins
A 13th-century Gothic castle, freely accessible. It lies on the route from Třemošná and is a popular hiking destination.
